This evolution reflects the show’s adaptability and its mission to provide fans with the most comprehensive coverage of the sport.
Presenting NASCAR with an innovative approach
Broadcasting the most popular spectator sport in the United States, NASCAR deserved a groundbreaking production. Realism and versatility were essential goals for the overhaul of NASCAR Race Hub, a weekday program offering in-depth analysis and insights into NASCAR action. FOX Sports needed a solution that could bridge physical and virtual elements seamlessly, making use of immersive technology to elevate storytelling and bring the racetrack into the studio.
“What we are trying to do is create a functional set that has different locations and hyper realism. We wanted to make sure that the workflows the production team has stayed the same.”
Zac Fields, Fox Sports – SVP Graphic Technology and Integration
FOX Sports looked for a versatile solution to present racetrack analysis, vehicle breakdowns, and augmented reality (AR) elements, all while maintaining photorealistic quality in its first state-of-the-art, multipurpose virtual studio. With a massive audience to cater to, FOX Sports sought to elevate storytelling and immerse fans like never before, setting the benchmark for broadcast innovation in its Charlotte facilities in North Carolina.
360-degree studio with virtual production and immersive technologies
FOX Sports partnered with Zero Density to develop a state-of-the-art virtual studio powered by Reality. The studio featured a 50’ x 47’ (15 x 14 meters) green screen, enabling a fully immersive 360-degree environment. This setup allowed the production team to create virtual spaces within hours and switch between programs effortlessly by integrating digital elements.
Being able to blend AR and 3D graphics better than ever before offers us the ability to deliver a seamless transition from the virtual set into the 3D world.”
Zac Fields, Fox Sports – SVP Graphic Technology and Integration
Powered by Reality, the studio transformed into a fully immersive 360-degree environment. Real-time data visualization tools of Reality enabled the FOX team to showcase analysis of racetracks, cars and raceshops, allowing for detailed visualizations, such as integrating entire race cars, stripping them down to the smallest components, and providing real-time racetrack analytics.
The studio played a vital role in FOX Sports’ NASCAR coverage. It is used daily for shows like Race Hub and on weekends for pre- and post-race coverage, such as Victory Lane. This flexibility allowed FOX Sports to engage audiences with dynamic content throughout the NASCAR season.
Hyper-realistic elements visualizing raw data with augmented reality
FOX Sports’ virtual studio transformed NASCAR broadcasting, enabling unparalleled production quality, efficiency, and storytelling. The immersive capabilities of the studio received industry-wide recognition, including the award for Excellence in Virtual Studios and Real-Time VFX at the Broadcast Tech Innovation Awards 2019.
The studio’s versatility allowed for seamless transitions between different programs. For example, in one instance, 3D racetracks appeared as though they were rising from the floor, or race cars virtually drove across the set.
“If you watch our show, you kinda lose yourself in the fact that it’s a virtual set.”
Zac Fields, Fox Sports – SVP Graphic Technology and Integration
Daily productions like NASCAR Race Hub leveraged this technology to engage fans with hyper-realistic AR and 3D elements, enhancing their connection to the sport. This innovation also improved operational efficiency. Automated systems and advancements in virtual production reduced the need for large crews, while the Reality platform allowed for quick content updates and intuitive workflows.
“Working with industry leaders and integrating cutting-edge technology has produced one of the most advanced studios in sports.”
Mark Silverman, FOX Sports, President and COO

For instance, viewers could see real-time data visualizations, such as race car analytics and track conditions, seamlessly blended with the physical world. AR not only enriches the viewing experience but also provides users with a deeper understanding of the sport. As AR technology continues to evolve, it promises to bring even more innovative and immersive experiences to sports fans around the world.
