Education Meets Virtual Production at the University of South Florida Studios

University of South Florida (USF) is setting a prime example of how an education institute can create attention-grabbing education contents with Virtual Production.

Introduction to Virtual Production in Education: University of South Florida Best Practice

Do you ever feel like you’re losing the battle for your students’ attention? What if you could deliver academic content in an engaging, familiar format? Welcome to the immersive world of virtual production and real-time motion graphics and a practical use case in education by the University of South Florida (USF).

Innovative InEd Studios at USF

The University of South Florida (USF) has always been at the forefront of innovation. Its InEd Studios, a testament to this commitment, is not your typical university production team. It is a full-service production powerhouse dedicated to creating high-quality content for online education, commercial projects, and documentaries. InEd’s dynamic team collaborates closely with faculty, learning designers, and external clients to produce engaging and impactful media.

“Our goal is to increase student engagement and improve student experience through our content. With Zero Density and virtual production, we engage with the students in different types of online education and multimedia.”

Jared Brown, Director of InEd Studios

The Journey of USF and Zero Density

In 2018, InEd Studios partnered with Zero Density, a leading provider of integrated solutions for virtual production and real-time motion graphics, with the vision of leveraging Zero Density’s advanced technology to enhance the educational content produced by USF.

With Zero Density’s platforms, InEd Studios has significantly expanded its capabilities. They now operate two state-of-the-art production studios: one equipped with an LED volume for immersive virtual production and another dedicated green screen studio using Zero Density’s innovative tools. These facilities allow the team to create highly engaging content that goes beyond traditional methods while giving USF the freedom to film in multiple virtual locations in the same day, significantly enhancing the efficiency and flexibility of their production process.

“What’s awesome about Zero Density is, when you create environments and build them and run down once they’re built, you can go back in any time and just hit run and you’ve got a full turnkey solution.”

John Cundy, Virtual Production Supervisor of InEd Studios

InEd Studios has successfully integrated Zero Density’s solutions into various projects. For instance, they have developed commercial content, documentaries, and specialized educational materials. Notable examples include placing a sustainability professor in a virtual “Plato’s Cave” and creating immersive environments for a water resource management course. Such projects demonstrate how Zero Density’s technology can transform conventional learning experiences into interactive and visually captivating sessions.

Small Team, Big Impact

The partnership with Zero Density has brought immense value to InEd Studios’ workflow. Despite being a small team, InEd Studios can deliver high-quality projects on tight schedules, thanks to the flexibility and capabilities of Zero Density’s platforms.

“Zero Density’s platforms allow you to do everything with a smaller team.
You can change environments on the fly and key really quickly.”

Jared Brown, Director of InEd Studios

Moreover, the integration of Zero Density’s tools has enhanced the team’s ability to collaborate across the university. Faculty members now have access to cutting-edge production facilities, allowing them to create content that significantly enhances student engagement and learning outcomes. The technology also opens up opportunities for students to experience virtual travel and unique educational scenarios that would be impossible in a traditional classroom setting.

Future Expansion of Virtual Production at USF

Looking ahead, USF and InEd Studios are excited to expand their collaboration with Zero Density. They are working closely with Zero Density to roll out the latest version of Reality, further enhancing their production capabilities. Additionally, they plan to partner with the College of Arts at USF to develop a comprehensive virtual production curriculum. This initiative aims to train students in Reality Hub and other advanced technologies, preparing them for high-demand careers in the industry.

“We’re super excited to roll out Reality5. We’ve been working closely with Andrew and some of the other ZD team members to implement that into our workflow.”

John Cundy, Virtual Production Supervisor of InEd Studios

Creating an Educational Track in Virtual Production

InEd Studios envisions creating a full educational track, potentially even a major, focused on virtual production. By providing hands-on experience with state-of-the-art equipment, they aim to equip students with the skills needed to thrive in the evolving digital landscape. This strategic move not only benefits students but also addresses the growing need for skilled professionals in the virtual production field.

The collaboration between USF and Zero Density marks a significant milestone in the evolution of educational content creation. By leveraging Zero Density’s advanced technology, InEd Studios has transformed its production capabilities, delivering high-quality, engaging content that enhances the learning experience. As they look to the future, USF and InEd Studios are poised to continue leading the way in virtual production, preparing the next generation of professionals to excel in this exciting field.
